Some say it is not necessary, but i wanted to make sure the paint adhered well. Once i had it in there i measured my fireplace to decide on a size to cut it.

The size tile that is shown in your photo looks to be 12 x 12 or 13 x 13. Add a clear coat of polyurethane if desired. Brush the sealer onto the surface of each tile using even strokes.

I used valspar duramax exterior paint and primer. Depending upon your location it may be called another name. Use a good primer so that your paint will stick.

Black paint (please read above update): Seal the paint onto the tiles with a urethane sealer. Grab a ½” professional stencil brush and dip it into a little bit of your grout line color paint.

I decided on a 9 inch square of a stencil. Begin each spray burst slightly before the edge of the slate, then end it after the slate, overlapping each application of paint row after row. Slate tile is porous and will absorb the paint, so it might be necessary to add additional coats of paint to achieve the desired color.

Place the free grout line stencil that comes with your tile stencil over the thin lines in between your stenciled tile. As long as the surfaces are smooth, the paint will be able to adhere better to your fireplace hearth. All i have left is the grout lines!

Whatever paint color is under the tape, use a little bit along the edge on top of the tape. Can you paint hearth stone? Paint the granit fireplace surround i mixed up a cup of 7 parts trophy to 2 parts artissimo (both colors from the miss mustard seed’s milk paint line ) and that was a pretty good match to the slate.

However, if you need to paint your fireplace tile, it’s possible! You don’t need a lot of paint for this part so be careful not to overload your brush. Please remember that preparation is the key to a lasting job and do all of the preparation steps before painting.

Wipe with water and allow to air dry. Paint the paint stripper onto the slate's surface with a paint roller and paint brush. I painted the first coat with a colored primer for the grout lines, taped off the grout lines with narrow masking tape and then i textured and sponged on a latex paint in a couple of coordinating colors to show texture.

I measured the height of the tile between the top of my fireplace and the bottom of the mantel. I made up a mixture of 2 cups of warm water and 1 drop of this dish soapin a small plastic container and wiped down the tile with a cotton cloth and the soap mixture. Again, i have no idea if this is the best product for this job but again it is what i had and what i used.

Mix a squirt or two of dish soap into a bucket of warm water. Make sure to paint grout as well. I then topped it off with a clearcoat to protect it.

Seal the slate first with an impregnating sealer for permanent protection to the stone. Also, since it’s exterior paint, i have high hopes it is more heat resistant. No matter what type of stone tile you want to paint, it must be clean and free from dust and dirt first.

This way, if any paint bleeds under the tape, it blends right in. Use a roller to apply paint evenly to the tile. Finally, i’m done stenciling tiles.
